AS.030.691 SOLID STATE CHEMISTRY

Last Updated: December 21, 2010, 2:40 PM

FALL 2010

TOPIC

Survey of the principles of the structure and properties of non-molecular solids. The course will cover basic crystallography, including space group symmetry and structure determination by x-ray, neutron, and electron diffraction, as well as fundamental concepts of bonding in solids. Topics include lattice dynamics, electronic band structure, magnetism, and strongly correlated electron behavior, and their relationship to observed materials properties such as superconductivity, thermoelectricity, and optical properties.

Note to Physics Students: This course is designed to be complementary to AS.171.405 (Condensed Matter Physics). There shouldbe only nominal overlap between the two courses, so you may find value in taking both.
